Two humanitarian aid ships, Friendship and Tigger Moth, disappeared a week after departing Mexico for Cuba. Authorities have launched a search-and-rescue operation to locate the vessels, which were carrying vital supplies. No communication has been received since their departure, intensifying the urgency of the mission.
Authorities are currently conducting a search-and-rescue operation following reports that two humanitarian aid ships traveling from Mexico to Havana, Cuba have gone missing. The vessels, identified as Friendship and Tigger Moth, departed from Isla Mujeres in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo on Friday, March 20. Since their departure, the ships have not established contact with authorities, prompting concerns for the crew's safety.
Search-and-Rescue Efforts Initiated
The Mexican Navy confirmed the initiation of a search-and-rescue mission to locate the missing vessels. Military aircraft and naval teams have been deployed to the area where the ships were last tracked. Officials emphasized that there has been no communication from the vessels since leaving Mexican waters, intensifying the urgency of the search operation.
Vessel and Crew Information
Both ships were transporting humanitarian aid supplies to Cuba. A total of nine crew members were aboard the vessels, representing multiple nationalities including Polish, French, Cuban, and American. The ships were originally scheduled to reach Havana on Tuesday, March 24, or Wednesday, March 25; however, no communication has been received to confirm their arrival. One other ship from the same humanitarian convoy reportedly arrived in Havana safely on Tuesday.
The convoy's spokesperson stated that the captains and crews are experienced sailors and confirmed that the ships were equipped with appropriate safety and signaling equipment. Full cooperation with authorities has been ensured, and confidence in the crews’ abilities to navigate to Cuba was expressed prior to the disappearance.
Humanitarian Aid Mission
The aid mission is intended to support Cuba amid ongoing energy shortages and widespread power outages affecting the nation's population of approximately 10 million. Restrictions on oil shipments imposed by the United States have exacerbated the crisis, creating challenges for daily life and essential services. The aid initiative, organized by non-governmental groups such as the Nuestra America Convoy, involved volunteers in Mexico who loaded provisions onto the ships. Supplies included:
- Rice and beans
- Baby formula
- Baby wipes and other essential items
International Coordination
The Mexican Navy has been coordinating with maritime rescue centers from the countries of the crew members, including Poland, France, Cuba, and the United States. Diplomatic representatives from these nations have also been contacted to assist in the ongoing search efforts. Media sources report that authorities are still awaiting responses from the international rescue coordination centers involved in the mission.

The situation remains critical as search teams continue to trace possible routes taken by the missing ships.
