Chevron has cut prices on Venezuelan crude following the seizure of a tanker by U.S. authorities, raising uncertainty in Gulf Coast oil markets and signaling heightened tensions in Americas energy trade.

Chevron has quietly lowered the pricing of Venezuelan crude oil supplied to U.S. refineries following the interception of a tanker by American authorities near Venezuelas coastline. This adjustment has increased uncertainty in an already fragile export route, heightening fluctuations in Gulf Coast oil markets.

According to sources familiar with the situation, on December 11 Chevron offered Venezuelan crude at a lower price than a comparable sale made just two days earlier. The timing of this reduction coincided with the U.S. seizure of the tanker Skipper, a vessel under sanctions, which was intercepted in the Caribbean while allegedly heading toward the United States.

The Skipper is currently anchored near the Dominican Republic, pending further instructions. The presence of this vessel has introduced additional oil into the already weak Gulf Coast market, contributing to a further decline in regional prices, even as global crude benchmarks such as Brent have also decreased.

The tanker seizure forms part of a wider strategy by the U.S. government to intensify pressure on Caracas. Under previous administration policies, sanctions targeted key associates of Nicols Maduro, shipping companies, and tankers associated with Venezuelas opaque crude export operations. The action reflects a renewed strict enforcement approach, affecting both maritime transport and the financial transactions connected to Venezuelan oil.

Chevron, which is the last major U.S. company still operating in Venezuela, has confirmed that it continues to act fully in accordance with U.S. laws and Treasury Department sanctions. Despite escalating tensions, the company continues to sell Venezuelan crude, planning approximately ten shipments for January, indicating that its joint ventures with state-owned PDVSA remain operational under the ongoing pressure from Washington.

Venezuelas oil export infrastructure continues to face significant challenges due to long-term underinvestment, systemic corruption, and previous sanctions. PDVSA relies on outdated facilities, improvised blending practices, and a fleet of vessels that often operate with transponders turned off. Recent sanctions have specifically targeted these loopholes, limiting the ability of sanctioned crude to reach international buyers.

The seizure of the Skipper represents a significant escalation. Former President Trump described it as the largest tanker ever seized, framing the operation as part of broader efforts to combat drug trafficking and sanction evasion. Venezuela condemned the action as international piracy, while Russia publicly expressed support for the Maduro administration.

As a direct effect of these developments, Venezuelan crude prices have fallen. U.S. refiners are now obtaining and demanding larger discounts on Venezuelan oil. With U.S. sanctions tightening and Caracas maintaining its position, expectations are that the pressure on Venezuelan oil exports will continue for the foreseeable future.
