Public joins State Mural Project, abandoning paintbrushes

HONOLULU Today, local residents are picking up brushes at the Kalanimoku Building to contribute to a new mural designed to bring the community together. The artwork is being created inside the basement parking area, transforming an otherwise plain space into a collaborative artistic project.

The mural is led by Solomon Enos, Artist-in-Residence for the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts, in partnership with the Department of Accounting and General Services. The design incorporates abstract patterns representing connection, movement, and community. The colors and motifs are inspired by the Hawaiian Islands and their natural environment, grounding the piece in local culture. Enos explains, Nets carry, capture, gather and also symbolize networks.

State officials note that the mural wall is one of the first things visitors see upon entering the Kalanimoku Building. By allowing the public to participate, the project aims to make the space more inviting and give people a chance to contribute to their surroundings.

Earlier this month, the DAGS Central Services Division prepared the wall by cleaning and priming it. Today, community members are helping to fill in the mural, with no prior art experience required. Enos is on-site to guide participants throughout the process.

Attendees are advised to wear clothing that can get paint on it. All brushes, paints, and materials are supplied, and light refreshments are available. Restroom facilities are located inside the building, and free parking is offered nearby for participants.
