Accelerated Regeneration Plan for Liverpool Docklands

The regeneration of Liverpool's docklands is set to be fast-tracked, with plans for thousands of new homes and commercial spaces close to the upcoming Everton football stadium, according to the regions mayor, Steve Rotheram.

Rotheram has revealed a strategy to speed up redevelopment projects in the city's North Docks area by creating a Mayoral Development Corporation (MDC). Working alongside the city council, he intends to deliver 17,500 new homes and 5 million square feet of commercial space over the next 15 years in the newly designated development zone along the River Mersey, adjacent to the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

The mayor emphasized that the successful transformation of Albert Dock stands as proof of what can be achieved through long-term, bold planning. He stated: "Liverpool's iconic waterfront is one of the nation's most valuable assets. However, for decades, large parts of the North Docks have remained derelict, serving as a stark reminder of the jobs and opportunities lost during years of industrial decline."

Rotheram continued, "The local community has waited far too long for this area to be revitalized, but by collaborating with government partners, we now have an unparalleled opportunity to rectify this situation. The redevelopment of Albert Dock shows exactly what can be achieved with a long-term vision."

He also added, "With Evertons new stadium emerging on the banks of the Mersey and stakeholders all working towards the same goal, the North Docks can undergo a similar transformation from abandoned land to a thriving hub that both local residents and visitors will be proud of."

The announcement of the MDC follows a recent 700 million housing initiative for the region. Housing and Local Government Secretary Steve Reed commented: "It is essential that mayors are given more powers to create jobs, improve connectivity, and increase housing availability. This kind of regional regeneration will have a tangible, positive impact on local communities."

Liam Robinson, Leader of Liverpool City Council, described the regeneration of the 174-hectare area largely composed of brownfield land as a significant opportunity for both residents and businesses. He stated, "Unlocking this area will create thousands of jobs, provide support for local businesses, and solidify Liverpools position as a thriving economic center."

Robinson added that the MDC will ensure that regeneration progresses more swiftly, directly benefits local communities, and promotes sustainable growth across the city region.
