The Actual Expense of a Disney Getaway: The Amount of Debt Individuals are Accumulating

But these days, the price of a Disney vacation can turn that magic into a financial burden for many families. So, what is the actual cost of a Disney vacation? And how much debt do visitors tend to accumulate while planning or going on such trips?

In a recent video, financial expert George Kamel interviewed tourists at Disney Springs in Florida to uncover the amount of debt they are carrying. Heres what he found.

The Rising Costs of a Disney Vacation

When planning a trip to Disney, the first major expense that comes to mind is the park admission fees. A single-day ticket to a Disney World theme park now costs $119. For a family of four, that amounts to nearly $500 just for one day. Beyond that, youll have to factor in travel expenses (like fuel or airfare), lodging, and meals, which can increase the total cost substantially. One family mentioned in the video that they spent around $8,000 for an eight-day trip.

How Much Debt Are Disney Visitors Carrying?

Many of the Disney vacationers in the video had significant amounts of debt. One tourist revealed they were burdened with $35,000 in student loans and an additional $1,000 in credit card debt. Another participant said their debt, which included credit card balances and car loans, totaled nearly $60,000.

Student Loan Debt

The primary source of debt for many people, as revealed in the video, is student loans. This is not surprising, given that Americans collectively owe over $1.8 trillion in student loan debt. More than 43 million Americans, or roughly 1 in 6 adults, are currently carrying federal student loan debt.

Car Loans

Car loans also play a significant role in many peoples financial burdens. In 2025, the average amount borrowed for a new car was over $40,000, with monthly payments averaging $745 for new cars and $521 for used ones.

Credit Card Debt

Credit card debt is another common issue for those heading to Disney. One interviewee mentioned putting half of their vacation expenses on a Disney credit card, in addition to carrying around $5,000 in credit card debt. Kamel asked these tourists how they planned to pay off their debt and how long it would take. Many of them cited plans to use balance transfer offers or cards with low initial interest rates, but its important to remember that credit cards often come with very high interest rates. In August 2025, the average credit card interest rate was a staggering 21.39%, making it easy for debt to grow rapidly if payments are only made at the minimum level.

Creating a Financial Strategy for a Disney Trip

While it may seem tempting to use debt to finance a Disney vacation, the best approach is to consider your financial health as a whole. Take a step back and assess your ability to cover the vacation costs without borrowing. Will the trip fit into your overall financial plan? Can you save up for it over time?

In his video, Kamel summed it up by saying, Despite their mounting debt, many Americans will go deeper into it by spending thousands of dollars to visit Disney.
