Funding has been confirmed to safeguard one of Wales most iconic canals from running dry. Last March, unusually dry conditions sparked concerns that the 225-year-old Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal might lose its water supply within days, threatening the 1,000 jobs dependent on the waterway.

The Welsh government, together with the Canal and River Trust, has agreed to provide a combined 500,000 annually over the next five years to ensure a stable water supply for the canal.

Huw Irranca-Davies, Deputy First Minister responsible for climate change, stated that the funding allows time to build long-term resilience for this valuable waterway.

The 35-mile (56 km) canal winds through Bannau Brycheiniog National Park and the Blaenavon Industrial Landscape, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, attracting around three million visitors annually.

Sally Curtis, co-owner of Road House Narrowboats in Gilwern, near Abergavenny, expressed relief at the announcement. She described the past year as challenging and emotional, emphasizing that the funding secures not only her business but also other enterprises reliant on the canal.

Many local businesses depend on the tourism the canal brings. This is fantastic news, Curtis added, recalling fears earlier this year that their business could have collapsed after years of investment.

More than 1,000 jobs rely on the canal, which contributes approximately 30 million to the Welsh economy. Water shortages were a risk earlier in the year due to restrictions on withdrawals from the environmentally sensitive River Usk.

The Welsh government will contribute up to 400,000 annually, with the Canal and River Trust adding up to 100,000 per year.

Maintaining the water level is essential. A canal only functions if it has water, said Irranca-Davies, highlighting the canals biodiversity and the thriving local businesses it supports.

Earlier this year, around 5 million was invested in refurbishing the Manorafon pumping station, securing water supply until the following spring.

Georgina Wood, regional operations manager for the Canal and River Trust, noted that without this funding, safety and maintenance issues could have arisen, including potential damage to wooden lock gates and problems with weirs and sluices.

Volunteer Paul Motte, who helps maintain the canal, welcomed the funding, noting its importance in continuing to share the canal experience with visitors from around the world. Many visitors come from overseas, enjoying the scenery at a leisurely pace, he said.

Analysis: Strategic Funding Secures the Future of a Historic Waterway

In my view, the confirmed financial support marks a necessary intervention to stabilize the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal after months of uncertainty. The allocation of £500,000 annually for the next five years provides immediate operational security and prevents a repeat of the water shortage fears experienced during last year’s unusually dry conditions.

The canal plays a measurable role in the regional economy. Around 1,000 jobs and approximately £30 million in annual economic activity depend on the waterway, largely through tourism and related local businesses. Without reliable water levels, the canal would quickly become inoperable, putting both infrastructure and employment at risk.

The funding also addresses environmental and infrastructure pressures linked to restrictions on water extraction from the River Usk. Combined with the recent £5 million investment in the Manorafon pumping station, the new financial commitment provides time for authorities and the Canal and River Trust to develop longer-term water management solutions.

Overall, the decision reflects recognition of the canal’s economic, environmental, and cultural importance. Ensuring stable water supply protects a historic transport corridor, supports tourism across Bannau Brycheiniog National Park, and safeguards businesses that rely on consistent visitor activity.
