NEW ORLEANS Amtrak's recently introduced Mardi Gras train service, which began operating in August to connect New Orleans and Mobile, Alabama, has experienced higher-than-anticipated ridership during its first three months along the Gulf Coast.

Amtrak announced on Thursday that over 46,000 passengers have traveled on the twice-daily roundtrip journeys since the service began, utilizing tracks from CSX, Norfolk Southern, and the New Orleans Public Belt Railroad.

"We are on track to exceed our initial projections," said Amtrak Board Chairman Anthony Coscia. "The demand across our network is exceptionally strong."

Amtrak Executive Vice President Jennifer Mitchell highlighted that communities along the route have quickly embraced the new service. "We are proud of the collaborative efforts with our partners in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama," she stated.

The service has also received notable backing from regional tourism organizations and the Southern Rail Commission.

Customer satisfaction for the Mardi Gras trains ranks at the top among all Amtrak routes, reflecting the efforts of train crews, engineers, on-board staff, and maintenance teams. About 96% of riders reported being "extremely satisfied" with their trips. On-time performance currently stands at 86%, among the highest in the Amtrak system, and even when delays occur, nearly 90% of passengers remain "extremely satisfied" with their experience.

Over the first 108 days, the Mardi Gras trains have carried an average of more than 420 passengers daily.
