Author warns that marijuana is 'incredibly dangerous' for young Americans

Despite its growing acceptance in society, marijuana remains a highly risky substance, according to Kevin Sabet, author of One Nation Under the Influence. He spoke with Elizabeth Vargas Reports about the dangers associated with the drug as some states reconsider their legalization policies.

Marijuana is extremely hazardous. Every year, millions of people visit emergency rooms due to acute marijuana-related incidents. Among young people, it is the leading reason for treatment, surpassing alcohol and all other drugs combined, Sabet stated.

Sabet clarified that occasional use by adults is not the main concern. Instead, he emphasized that the drug is increasingly targeted at adolescents whose brains are still developing, which poses a significant public health risk.

Recent federal legislation has addressed a loophole in the Farm Bill that previously allowed widespread sales of hemp-derived THC products, including delta-8 and delta-9. Under the updated rules, any hemp products containing more than 0.4 milligrams of THC per container are now illegal, effectively restricting most edibles, vapes, beverages, and gummies currently available on the market.

Massachusetts may become the first state to reverse its marijuana legalization after a coalition gathered enough signatures to place the issue on the 2026 ballot. Sabet, involved in the effort, is optimistic about its passage and sees it as a potential indicator of similar initiatives nationwide.

This marks the start of a broader movement. Momentum is building, and reversing it will not be easy, Sabet said.
