Alan Howard, co-founder of Brevan Howard, has moved from the UK to Switzerland, citing recent tax changes under the Labour government as a major factor. His departure is part of a broader trend, with several wealthy individuals relocating abroad due to increased taxes and the abolition of non-dom status.
Alan Howard, the co-founder of the hedge fund Brevan Howard, has become the latest prominent billionaire to leave the United Kingdom, citing recent changes in tax policies introduced by the Labour government as a significant reason for his decision. According to documents obtained by Bloomberg, Howard officially changed his residency to Switzerland earlier this year. His departure follows a wave of high-profile exits from the UK, as a number of influential figures have chosen to relocate abroad after the Labour party gained power. These exits are part of a larger trend that has seen a number of wealthy individuals seeking more favorable tax conditions in other countries.
Many of these billionaires are moving to countries such as Switzerland, the United Arab Emirates, and Italy, particularly Milan, which offer more attractive tax regimes for high-net-worth individuals. The UK governments decision to abolish the non-domiciled (non-dom) tax status and raise capital gains tax in 2023 has been a major factor contributing to the increased migration of wealthy individuals. This trend is not just limited to Howard, but has also involved other major figures from global finance and industry.
Alan Howards journey began in London, where he worked as a bond trader at Credit Suisse. It was here that he developed the skills and vision that would eventually lead him to co-found Brevan Howard in 2002, alongside a group of partners. Over time, the hedge fund grew into a global financial powerhouse, managing billions in assets and becoming one of the most influential firms in the industry. Before relocating, Howards fortune was estimated to be worth more than $4 billion, a significant increase from its earlier value of $3 billion. His success in the financial world made him one of the wealthiest individuals in the UK.
In 2022, Howards personal life made headlines when he married model-turned-chef Caroline Byron at a lavish wedding held at Lake Como. The event featured an extravagant performance by Lady Gaga, who serenaded the couple with a private concert. This spectacle added another layer of glamour to the already high-profile event, making it a memorable occasion for those in attendance.
Brevan Howard, the financial firm co-founded by Howard, is based in Jersey and manages a substantial portfolio of global investments, with an estimated value of $34 billion. Although Howard stepped down from his role as the companys head in 2019, his influence continues to be felt within the firm. He remains a key figure in its decision-making processes, even as he operates from a distance.
Throughout his career, Howard has also been a significant donor to political causes. He has consistently supported the Conservative Party in the UK, contributing over 1.8 million since 2005. His political donations include 40,000 to Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch in September 2024, as well as an additional 50,000 earlier in the year. These contributions highlight his continued involvement in British politics, even as he has chosen to move his residency abroad.
Howards decision to leave the UK is not the first time he has relocated for tax purposes. He moved to Geneva in 2010 after the UK government under David Cameron introduced stricter non-dom rules. However, he returned to the UK in 2017, settling in St Johns Wood, London. Now, with the recent tax changes under the Labour government, Howard has once again chosen to leave the country in favor of a more tax-friendly environment in Switzerland.
