Blaze Media Brings Shame to Conservatives

On November 8, Blaze Media released an article by Steve Baker and Joseph Hanneman claiming to have pinpointed the individual behind the pipe bombs left outside the Republican and Democratic National Committee offices on January 5, 2021. The piece included grainy footage of a suspected perpetrator alongside four images of former Capitol Police officer Shauni Kerkhoff.

The authors asserted: A forensic gait analysis of a female ex-Capitol Police officer shows a 94%-98% similarity to the stride of the Jan. 6 pipe-bomb suspect, according to our investigation and corroborated by multiple intelligence sources. They also cited an unnamed congressional source suggesting potential law enforcement involvement in the incident.

Using software to assess walking patternsconsidering knee bend, hip extension, speed, step length, cadence, and variancethe program reportedly rated Shauni Rae Kerkhoff, 31, of Alexandria, Virginia, as a 94% match. A veteran analyst claimed visual review increased that match to approximately 98%.

Baker and Hanneman warned that confirming a Capitol Police officer as the culprit could dramatically alter the prevailing narrative of January 6, challenging the depiction of the event as a right-wing insurrection. Baker promoted the story on X, calling it potentially the biggest scandal and conspiracy in American history, garnering 16 million views.

However, Kerkhoff provided an alibi, showing video of herself playing with her dogs at the time of the crime. Subsequently, authorities arrested Brian Cole Jr. for the pipe bomb incidents, clearing Kerkhoff of any involvement.

This misstep has prompted criticism of conservative media. While alternative outlets exist to counterbalance perceived liberal bias in mainstream media, sensational reporting aimed at entertainment over accuracy undermines credibility. Reputable conservative journalists remain at outlets such as National Review, The Washington Examiner, The Free Press, and Fox News, but othersincluding Blaze Media, Tucker Carlson, Candace Owens, and One America News Networkhave cultivated audiences despite questionable reporting practices.

The episode highlights the risk of rewarding media figures who prioritize shock value over truth. Such errors not only damage individual reputations but can also tarnish the broader conservative movement. Until accountability is prioritized over profitability, similar reckless reporting will continue to occur.
