Several major companies reported their quarterly earnings this week, including Broadcom (AVGO), Oracle (ORCL), and Lululemon (LULU), shedding light on their performance for investors. While the overall earnings season for Q3 has been strong, individual results have varied significantly.

As of December 5, 99% of S&P 500 companies had reported their third-quarter results, according to FactSet data. Analysts are forecasting a 13.4% year-over-year increase in earnings per share for the third quarter, marking the fourth consecutive quarter of double-digit growth. However, this performance comes against a backdrop of lower expectations, with analysts initially predicting only a 7.9% earnings jump for Q3.

Retailers, including GameStop (GME), AutoZone (AZO), and Chewy (CHWY), have provided more insight into consumer spending, while other significant players like Costco (COST) have also offered their quarterly updates.

Broadcom Sees Gains Despite Decline in Stock Price

Broadcom (AVGO) reported impressive growth, fueled by strong demand for its AI chips, despite a slight dip in stock price. The chipmaker posted record revenue of $18 billion in its fiscal fourth quarter, up 28% year-over-year. AI semiconductor revenue soared 74% compared to the previous year, a key driver behind the company's success. Looking forward, Broadcom expects its AI semiconductor revenue to double in Q1, reaching $8.2 billion.

Lululemon CEO Steps Down, Stock Soars

Lululemon (LULU) announced that CEO Calvin McDonald will step down from his role at the end of January, with interim co-CEOs taking over during the transition. McDonalds tenure since 2018 saw significant growth, particularly in China, and Lululemons stock rose by 10% in after-hours trading following this announcement. The company also reported a 7% revenue increase, driven largely by international sales.

Despite the leadership change, Lululemons earnings were stronger than expected, with earnings per share of $2.59, surpassing the anticipated $2.22. The company forecasts continued growth, projecting full-year revenues to reach between $10.96 billion and $11 billion, with a 4% increase year-over-year.

Costco Exceeds Expectations, But Stock Reaction Muted

Costco (COST) posted better-than-expected earnings for its fiscal first quarter, with adjusted earnings per share of $4.50, beating Wall Streets estimate of $4.28. Revenue, which includes net sales and membership fees, came in at $67.3 billion, slightly exceeding expectations of $67.1 billion. Same-store sales grew 6.4%, surpassing analysts' forecasts.

Despite these positive results, Costcos stock reaction was subdued, with investors noting that its growth, while solid, did not stand out in comparison to other retail giants. Analysts are divided on Costco, with a mixture of Buy and Hold ratings across the Street.

Retail Trends and Market Response

The retail sector continues to show resilience, with companies like RH (RH) and Victoria's Secret (VSCO) also making headlines. RH reported a strong 9% revenue increase, although its earnings per share were below expectations. Victoria's Secret raised its full-year sales guidance after reporting a 9% year-over-year revenue increase for Q3.

However, the broader tech and AI sectors are not immune to market volatility, with Oracles recent report causing some concern. The tech giant fell short of expectations, with its revenue not meeting analysts' forecasts, particularly in its cloud business.

Summary of Key Earnings Reports

  • Broadcom: AI chips drive strong Q4 results, with expectations of continued growth.
  • Lululemon: CEO transition and solid Q3 performance; stock rises in after-hours trading.
  • Costco: Beats earnings and revenue estimates, but stock response is muted.
  • RH: Revenue growth beats expectations, but earnings miss estimates.
  • Victoria's Secret: Raises full-year sales guidance after stronger-than-expected Q3 results.
  • Oracle: Revenue disappoints, raising concerns over AI investments.
