Cannabis vape pens and a machete discovered during shop raids

Authorities confiscated cannabis vapes, a machete, and over 203,000 counterfeit cigarettes during coordinated raids in Wellingborough town centre. The operations took place on 26 November across shops on Market Street, Cambridge Street, and Victoria Road.

Northamptonshire Police reported that the estimated unpaid excise duty for the seized cigarettes and 40kg (6st 2lb) of illicit tobacco totals around 120,000.

Sgt Glenn Thompson stated, "This operation highlights our commitment to tackling criminal activity in our communities."

The raids were conducted jointly by police, HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC), Trading Standards, and North Northamptonshire Council. Items recovered included:

  • Counterfeit clothing and children's toys
  • More than 3,500 illegal vapes
  • Non-UK compliant medicine
  • Nitrous oxide
  • Over 7,000 in cash

Additionally, several businesses received notices from the council concerning improper waste disposal practices.

Authorities have urged residents to report any suspicious activity in their local shops. Sgt Thompson emphasized that the raids were informed by tips from the public, adding, "Operations like these rely on the support and vigilance of our community."
