A steel production company located at Chatham Docks has announced that it is entering consultations that could result in 85 employees losing their jobs. ArcelorMittal Kent Wire, Europes largest steel manufacturer, initiated the process last week in anticipation of vacating its Pier Road facility.

The firm had opposed recently approved redevelopment plans for the docks, warning that the project could force them off the site. A company spokesperson stated, We have informed our staff that a consultation period has begun, with all positions at the location at risk due to significant operational challenges.

ArcelorMittal Kent Wire has been struggling with issues such as weak market demand, competition from Chinese steel producers, and US-imposed tariffs.

Redevelopment and Legal Challenges

Peel Waters, the owner of the docks, received approval from Medway Council in May 2024 to develop a new business hub on the site. Efforts by then-MP Kelly Tolhurst to overturn the decision delayed the projects final approval until November 2024. The development plan is currently subject to a judicial review, which was heard in the High Court on October 2930, with the verdict still pending.

ArcelorMittal Kent Wire, alongside the Save Chatham Docks campaign, had voiced opposition to the redevelopment. Peel Waters also intends to construct a 950-home residential development including a supermarket and a pub.

Community Response

Kelly Tolhurst expressed her concern for the affected workers, saying she was devastated for the employees at the docks. She highlighted the challenges of finding new employment, describing the situation as a very frightening time, especially approaching the holiday season.

A Peel Waters spokesperson emphasized their efforts over the past decade to find alternative relocation options for ArcelorMittal Kent Wire and other tenants, stating, We remain committed to delivering Basin 3, subject to the outcome of the ongoing judicial review.
