Chiefs expected to trade 2-time Pro Bowler in major offseason deal

The Kansas City Chiefs have experienced a challenging NFL season, falling short of expectations after last years Super Bowl defeat. Despite high hopes for a strong comeback, the team enters Week 14 with a 6-6 record, positioned third in a competitive AFC West.

Financial concerns loom large, as the Chiefs are projected to have the smallest amount of effective cap space in the league for 2026. NFL Trade Rumors analyst Logan Ulrich suggests this could prompt a bold offseason trade to ease the teams salary burden.

Cornerback Trent McDuffie is a player the Chiefs are keen to retain, but with his contract expiring after the 2026 season, affordability may become an issue. Ulrich noted:

"Kansas City has McDuffie under contract for one more season, but if it becomes clear that negotiating an extension is too difficult, a trade could be the solution, similar to what happened with Hill. The team must also be mindful of its significant 2026 cap constraints."

While McDuffies 2026 contract provides some security, a trade may be the most practical option if an extension cannot be agreed upon. General Manager Brett Veach has a history of moving high-priced stars, including Joe Thuney, Tyreek Hill, and LJarius Sneed, to manage cap space.

McDuffies credentials are impressive, with a Pro Bowl selection and two Super Bowl rings. In 2025, he has participated in all 12 games, recording 62 tackles, two tackles for loss, one sack, and one interception. Pro Football Focus has rated him 76.7, ranking him 6th among 108 qualified cornerbacks.

Given his performance, McDuffie would attract interest from multiple teams, though the Chiefs are expected to demand significant compensation. Should Kansas City miss the playoffs, the likelihood of major offseason moves increases. The team still faces three remaining AFC West matchups, leaving room for unexpected outcomes.
