Coca-Cola HBC, a primary bottling and packaging partner for the Coca-Cola brand, has unveiled an innovative packaging format designed to significantly reduce plastic waste. The new solution is currently undergoing early trials in Austria, according to Manufacturing Digital.
The company collaborated with DS Smith and packaging machinery specialist Krones to develop Lift Up a fully recyclable cardboard handle intended to replace the plastic shrink wrap normally used to bundle 1.5-liter bottles. Although simple in appearance, this fiber-based carrier represents a major step toward reducing reliance on plastic materials.
Plastic is produced using fossil fuels such as oil and natural gas, contributing to pollution and global warming. Replacing plastic packaging elements helps cut climate-warming emissions, protects communities from extreme weather, and limits the spread of microplastics in water, food, and the human body.
Coca-Cola HBC estimates that switching to Lift Up could eliminate about 200 metric tons of plastic annually from its supply chain, while also reducing emissions linked to production, packing, and logistics. Alongside this carrier system, the company has introduced a recyclable wraparound label to replace other plastic-based branding materials.
This initiative aligns with successful industry experiments such as paper six-pack rings, biodegradable bioplastics, and other eco-friendly packaging formats. Marcel Martin of Coca-Cola HBC noted that the introduction of Lift Up supports the companys goal of reaching net-zero emissions by 2040, stating that they will continue to innovate and invest to deliver beverages more sustainably.
Although fiber solutions still have an environmental cost due to tree harvesting and industrial activity, the shift toward renewable power and responsibly managed forests can significantly reduce the impact. Consumers can also encourage progress by choosing brands with plastic-free packaging and understanding how to recycle items properly to support circular systems.
