Atmos Energy Corporation (ATO), based in Dallas, Texas, is a regulated provider of natural gas, with a market cap of approximately $27 billion, placing it well above the $10 billion "large-cap" category. The company serves 3.4 million customers across eight states via 76,000 miles of pipeline in its Distribution segment.
In its Pipeline and Storage segment, Atmos manages 5,700 miles of transmission lines and operates five storage facilities in Texas. It also offers transportation and auxiliary services for third-party gas, cementing its position as a key player in critical energy infrastructure and a reliable energy provider.
Currently, ATO stock is trading roughly 7.5% lower than its November peak of $180.65, although it has seen modest growth over the last three months. For comparison, the State Street Utilities Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLU) has gained 1.2% in the same time frame.
Over the past year, ATO stock has risen by 19.3%, delivering a year-to-date (YTD) gain of nearly 20%. In contrast, XLU has only increased by 10.9% over the last 12 months and 13.7% YTD, highlighting Atmos Energy's relative strength and ongoing investor confidence.
Technical data further supports this positive trend. Since the beginning of the year, ATO has consistently traded above its 200-day moving average of $161.45, indicating long-term support. While it briefly dipped below its 50-day moving average of $174.14 in December, it quickly rebounded, suggesting a short-term correction within an overall bullish trajectory.
After the release of its Q4 fiscal 2025 earnings on November 5, ATO shares rose nearly 1.7% in the following trading session. The company reported earnings per share (EPS) of $1.07 and revenues of around $754.6 million, both surpassing estimates and reflecting strong operational performance.
For the full fiscal year, Atmos Energy posted a net income of $1.2 billion, with an EPS of $7.46, supported by capital expenditures of about $3.6 billion, primarily allocated to upgrading system safety and reliability. Looking ahead, the company has issued an optimistic FY2026 forecast, with projected EPS in the range of $8.15$8.35, and a capital expenditure plan of $4.2 billion.
When compared to its competitors, Atmos Energy stands out. For instance, New Jersey Resources Corporation (NJR) has seen a 4.1% decline in its stock over the last year and a 1.6% drop YTD, further underscoring the strength and growth of Atmos Energy's operations.
Despite its solid fundamentals, analysts remain cautious, maintaining a "Hold" consensus rating from 14 analysts. However, the stock's average price target of $175.91 suggests a potential upside of 5.3% from its current level.
