Cynthia Erivo was recently seen in New York City carrying an exceptionally large Herms Birkin bag. Known for its rarity, the bag was originally designed for equestrian use and is valued between $13,000 and $25,000.
The 38-year-old singer and actress was photographed in Palm Springs, California, sporting a casual outfit: a gray cardigan, wide-leg jeans, and a brown leather coat. The standout piece, however, was the beige Birkin in size 50, an extra-large version of the famed handbag.
Luxury reseller Sellier notes that this oversized Birkin, officially named Haut Courroies (HAC), was initially intended to carry everything needed for a day at the stables. Current listings include a pre-owned gray version at $16,008 on Modesens, a tan bag for $25,500 on What Goes Around Comes Around, and another tan option at $12,985 on 1st Dibs.
The Herms Birkin first debuted in 1981 after the brands artistic director, Jean-Louis Dumas, met actress and singer Jane Birkin on a flight. Observing her belongings spilling from a wicker handbag, Dumas designed a practical yet stylish bag for her. Herms officially named the silhouette after Birkin in 1985.
Jane Birkin's original handbag was auctioned in July as part of Sothebys Paris Fashion Icons sale, selling for $10.1 million to Japanese businessman Shinsuke Sakimoto after intense bidding among nine collectors. The prototype had previously been donated to a French AIDS charity auction in 1994. Throughout her life, Herms gifted Birkin four additional bags, but she often carried the original design. Birkin passed away in 2023 at age 76.
The Herms Birkin continues to be a celebrity status symbol. In September, Lisa was seen in Seoul with a rare 2021 Faubourg Birkin, priced at $300,000. Around the same time, Kylie Jenner carried a Birkin valued at $163,000 on a private jet flight.
Analysis: The Ongoing Cultural Significance of the Hermès Birkin Bag
The recent appearance of Cynthia Erivo carrying an oversized Hermès Birkin bag in New York City highlights the enduring status of the luxury handbag in celebrity culture. Known for its exclusivity and high price tag, the Birkin continues to be a symbol of wealth and prestige. This particular bag, the Haut à Courroies (HAC), is not only a nod to Hermès' equestrian roots but also to the brand's ability to adapt its designs to modern luxury demands.
The bag, valued between $13,000 and $25,000, exemplifies Hermès' commitment to craftsmanship and quality. However, it is not just the design and the material that make the Birkin so desirable—it is the limited availability and the stories attached to each piece. The brand's historical connection to actress Jane Birkin, who inspired the creation of the bag, has only added to its mystique. In fact, the original bag once owned by Birkin herself recently sold for an astounding $10.1 million, proving the item's cultural and financial worth.
Despite its hefty price, the Birkin is no longer just a luxury item for the elite; it has become a marker of social status, an object coveted by both fashion enthusiasts and collectors worldwide. With figures like Lisa and Kylie Jenner also spotted sporting Birkins, the bag remains a staple in the world of high fashion. Yet, the question remains: Is the Birkin's popularity driven by its design, or by its cultural associations with fame and exclusivity?
As the resale market continues to thrive, the Birkin's value seems to be more than just monetary—it is a symbol of aspirational luxury. The bag's lasting impact on fashion culture suggests that the Hermès Birkin will remain a coveted item for years to come, solidifying its place as one of the most iconic accessories in the history of luxury fashion.
