Dario Vitale has stepped down as creative director of Versace after serving for less than a year. The 52-year-old designer took over the role earlier this year when Donatella Versace, 70, decided to step back from day-to-day creative leadership. Donatella had helmed the iconic fashion house following the tragic death of her brother Gianni Versace in 1997.
The fashion brand confirmed the departure on December 4, stating that both parties "mutually agreed to part ways," with Vitales final day set for December 12. Lorenzo Bertelli, Versaces executive chairman, expressed gratitude for Vitales contributions during the transitional period and wished him success in future endeavors.
In the interim, Versaces operations will be overseen by CEO Emmanuel Gintzburger while the search for a new creative director continues.
Vitale, who previously spent over a decade honing his skills at Miu Miu, assumed the top position at Versace in April. However, his brief tenure comes amid significant changes at the company, including its acquisition by the Prada Group on December 2 for $1.38 billion, a notable decrease from the $2 billion Capri Holdings had paid in 2018.
During his short time at Versace, Vitale presented his debut collection in September, drawing inspiration from 1980s fashion with bold colors and distinctive menswear shapes. Observers have noted that adapting from Miu Mius youthful audience to Versaces elite clientele may have posed challenges for the designer.
The transition marks another significant moment in Versaces ongoing evolution as it continues under new ownership and seeks fresh creative leadership.
Analysis: Versace Faces Creative Transition Amid Ownership Change
Dario Vitale’s departure as creative director after less than a year highlights the challenges of leadership transition in luxury fashion. His tenure, beginning in April, coincided with Versace’s recent acquisition by the Prada Group, signaling a period of strategic and creative realignment for the brand.
Vitale’s debut collection in September, featuring 1980s-inspired menswear and bold colors, reflected his experience at Miu Miu but may have struggled to resonate fully with Versace’s established elite clientele. The short duration of his tenure suggests adaptation challenges and differing visions between the designer and the house.
With CEO Emmanuel Gintzburger temporarily overseeing operations, the search for a new creative director will be closely watched. This change occurs against the backdrop of Versace’s evolving ownership structure, including a notable decrease in acquisition value from Capri Holdings to the Prada Group, emphasizing both the pressures and opportunities facing the iconic brand.
The departure underscores the broader theme of transformation within Versace, as the company balances heritage, market expectations, and fresh creative leadership in an increasingly competitive luxury market.
