DIRECTV is expanding its streaming platform with the launch of seven new multiview Mix Channels, offering subscribers more options for watching multiple shows simultaneously.

The updated service allows users to view up to four live channels on a single screen, making it ideal for sports enthusiasts following multiple games, viewers keeping up with continuous news, or families with varying entertainment preferences. Users can easily switch between audio feeds for each channel or focus on a single channel with one click.

These multiview options are part of DIRECTVs Mix Channels packages, which are curated selections grouped by genres and interests. Existing Mix Channels include:

  • Sports Mix: ESPN, ESPN2, FS1, NBC Sports Now
  • League Sports Mix: MLB Network, NBA TV, NFL Network, NHL Network
  • News Mix: CNN, Fox News Channel, Fox Weather, MSNBC
  • Kids Mix: Disney Channel, Disney Jr., Disney XD, Nickelodeon
  • Business Mix
  • Locals Mix: ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC (available in select markets)
  • Sunday Sports Mix: CBS, FOX, ESPN, FS1

Subscribers can choose to watch all four curated Mix Channels at once or select a single channel for full-screen viewing. Most multiview channels are included in all DIRECTV streaming packages, with some accessible via specific Genre Packs. Availability depends on the subscribers package and is limited to the channels included.

This multiview feature is only accessible on televisions and is not supported on other devices. DIRECTV first introduced mix channels to satellite TV customers in 2008 and is now bringing the experience to its OTT streaming service, allowing live TV streaming without a satellite dish or cable box.

According to DIRECTV, the new generation of Mix Channels delivers fully curated, genre-based layouts and local channel mixes, expanding the ways viewers can engage with content.

Analysis: DIRECTV Expands Streaming with New Multiview "Mix Channels"

DIRECTV's latest move to enhance its streaming service with the launch of seven new multiview "Mix Channels" marks a significant upgrade for subscribers seeking more control over their viewing experience. By allowing users to watch up to four live channels simultaneously, the new feature caters to diverse viewing needs, from sports fans following multiple games to families with varied entertainment interests.

This expansion strengthens DIRECTV’s streaming platform, which has long been known for its satellite offerings, now extending to OTT streaming. The multiview function, available exclusively on televisions, offers a curated selection of channels based on genre, allowing users to customize their experience. Notably, the updated service retains the ease of switching between audio feeds or focusing on a single channel, which adds flexibility for the viewer.

Despite the convenience of multiple channels displayed in one view, it is important to note that availability is dependent on the subscriber's package. While most multiview channels are included in all streaming plans, certain channels may be limited to specific Genre Packs. This detail is crucial for users to understand the full scope of what’s included in their subscription and manage expectations accordingly.

The move to OTT streaming makes sense in the context of increasing cord-cutting trends and the demand for more flexible TV viewing. DIRECTV’s decision to bring these "Mix Channels" to streaming devices reflects an evolving strategy to maintain relevance in a highly competitive market.
