ESPN insiders reveal Tigers' trade plans for Tarik Skubal

The Detroit Tigers are entering an intriguing offseason, drawing attention from Major League Baseball teamsnot because they are major spending contenders, but due to the future of two-time Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal. With free agency approaching and no new contract in place, a trade for Skubal remains a possibility, though not a likely one.

According to ESPN MLB insiders Jeff Passan and Kiley McDaniel, the Tigers are firmly committed to keeping Skubal in Detroit this winter. "Despite speculation from multiple executives that Skubal could be traded," they report, "the Tigers are sticking to their stance that the back-to-back American League Cy Young award winner will remain with the team."

While numerous MLB teams might be interested in acquiring Skubaleven with a high price tagthe Tigers have no plans to move him. Passan and McDaniel estimate his trade probability at just 10%. Detroit is aiming to contend in 2026, and trading a pitcher of Skubals caliber would undermine that goal. His presence provides the team a legitimate shot at a World Series if the rest of the roster develops as expected.

Detroit is unlikely to part ways with Skubal unless an extraordinary offer emerges, which is improbable given that no team can extend him beyond the 2026 season. The potential risks of overpaying for only one season of his services are simply too high. Although Skubal could significantly enhance a teams championship chances, losing him after a single year would likely outweigh the short-term gain.

Passan and McDaniel conclude that, in line with the Tigers competitive strategy, there is no intention to trade Skubal. Unless an irresistible deal is presented, he is expected to finish his final season in Detroit before entering free agency.
