Brussels is set to initiate a fresh antitrust inquiry targeting Meta Platforms over the introduction of artificial intelligence features in WhatsApp, according to a report by the Financial Times.
The European Commission is expected to examine how Meta incorporated its AI system into the messaging app earlier this year, sources familiar with the matter told the newspaper. The announcement of the probe could happen in the coming days, although the schedule might change.
Meta has not publicly commented on the potential EU investigation. A company representative declined to provide remarks to the Financial Times regarding the upcoming probe.
Analysis: Brussels Launches Antitrust Investigation into Meta's AI Integration in WhatsApp
Brussels' move to open a new antitrust investigation against Meta Platforms signals a significant escalation in the European Union's scrutiny of major tech firms. This time, the focus is on how Meta introduced artificial intelligence features into WhatsApp, potentially raising concerns about anti-competitive behavior.
The European Commission's inquiry is expected to delve into whether Meta's use of AI in WhatsApp violates EU competition laws. The introduction of these new features could have substantial implications for both users and competitors in the messaging and tech industries. By leveraging AI to enhance user experience, Meta may be consolidating its market power, possibly making it harder for smaller competitors to thrive.
Although Meta has yet to comment on the investigation, the EU's increasing regulatory attention on large technology firms suggests that this case will likely be another example of how Europe is tightening its grip on tech giants. This investigation could lead to a broader examination of the company's business practices and its overall market dominance in Europe.
