European Cinema Association UNIC Criticizes Netflix-WB Deal as "Detrimental to Cinema in All Aspects" & "More Negative" Than Disney's Acquisition of Fox

The International Union of Cinemas (UNIC), representing 43,500 screens across 39 European countries, has expressed strong criticism of Netflix's major acquisition of Warner Bros. The organization warned that the deal could have serious consequences for movie theaters and said it will actively inform European and international policymakers about the potential risks to the cinema sector.

Despite Netflix assuring that it intends to continue Warner Bros.' current operations and preserve theatrical releases, UNIC voiced concerns over the long-term effects on film exhibition. Cinemas depend on a steady stream of films to remain viable, and UNIC argues that exclusive theatrical windows and robust marketing are essential for attracting audiences.

In an official statement, UNIC highlighted: Cinemas rely on films as their core product. To engage the widest audience successfully, content must be consistent, diverse, and supported by effective promotion. By this standard, Netflixs planned takeover of Warner Bros fails completely.

Laura Houlgatte, UNICs CEO, emphasized the risks posed by the acquisition: If a studio is absorbed by a streaming platform, cinemas will inevitably have fewer films to show, reducing revenue and potentially leading to theater closures and job losses. In many ways, this situation is even more concerning than Disneys purchase of 20th Century Fox.

She further criticized Netflixs historical approach to cinemas: Netflix has consistently shown little regard for theaters. Most of its film releases in cinemas are limited, often for awards consideration, and only for brief periods, depriving cinemas of fair exclusivity.

Phil Clapp, President of UNIC and CEO of the UK Cinema Association, added: Regulators must consider the potential impact of this deal on every aspect of cinema, including the wider public. Any decline in content diversity and quality, along with the possible closure of cinemas and job losses, would significantly harm Europes cultural scene.

UNIC affirmed it will actively communicate its opposition to competition authorities in Europe and globally, urging careful review of the proposed deal. Netflix remains confident about completing the acquisition and maintaining Warner Bros theatrical output, though the transaction will likely face regulatory scrutiny in both the U.S. and EU.
