Fast food chain acknowledges possible store closures as part of restructuring

A long-standing fast-food chain that has operated across the UK for more than twenty years is facing the possibility of closing certain locations and reducing staff, according to its owner. Renowned for its waffle fries and emphasis on healthy fast food, Leon has struggled to rebound from the impacts of the Covid pandemic, co-founder John Vincent revealed.

Vincent explained that he is currently in discussions with property landlords, which could lead to shutting down underperforming restaurants and cutting jobs. The chain operates over 70 company-owned outlets in the UK, alongside 29 franchise locations, including airports and transport hubs, employing around 1,120 people.

My goal is to transform Leon into the worlds favourite fast-food brand, Vincent said, emphasizing the need for restaurants to reconnect with the environment and sustainability. He returned to ownership of the chain in October after it was previously sold to the billionaire Issa brothers, owners of Asda, for 100 million in 2021.

During the pandemic, Leon faced significant financial challenges, with revenue dropping from 64.9 million in 2023 to 62.5 million in 2024, resulting in a pre-tax loss of 8.38 million. Vincent reportedly reacquired the business for 3050 million. He criticised the previous management under Asda, claiming that cost-cutting measures, such as reducing ingredient quality, led to declining profits. Accountants took over, but what we need are visionary leaders, he stated.

Several changes are planned for the chains restaurants. Menus will be streamlined, but popular items, including the chicken satay rice box, will remain. Cleanliness standards are set to rise, with managers required to share daily before and after cleaning photos via WhatsApp.

Vincent also mentioned that self-checkout kiosks might be removed, though he is still considering the decision, noting that some customers prefer interacting with staff. Leon has not issued an official comment regarding the potential changes.
