A food bank in Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire, is preparing for a tough winter as data highlights a significant rise in families seeking assistance across the West Midlands.
Jane Baker, manager of Newcastle-Staffs Foodbank, emphasized the urgent need for donations to maintain support for vulnerable individuals during the colder months. Her statement follows figures from the Trussell Trust showing that over 61,000 emergency food parcels were distributed across the region between December 2024 and February 2025.
Ms Baker stated, "We are gearing up for another difficult winter and need the public's help to continue providing for those facing hunger."
Last winter, the demand for food parcels rose by 27% compared to pre-pandemic levels. Of these parcels, 22,000 were provided to children, marking a 19% increase since 2019/2020.
"We are witnessing numerous working families, carers, and pensioners seeking help," Ms Baker added. "This situation is unacceptable."
While acknowledging that food banks are not a permanent solution to food insecurity, Ms Baker described them as a critical lifeline for thousands dealing with hardship. She warned, "We are committed to offering essential support this winter, but without donations, our operations could be at risk next year. Donations are decreasing while expenses rise. When resources run low, our food banks can't function."
The Trussell Trust reported that food banks in the West Midlands spent approximately 315,000 on food as donations struggled to match demand. Sophie Carre, the charity's Director of Engagement, commented, "While Christmas should bring joy, many will struggle just to get by. Tens of thousands of families may have to rely on a food bank for the first time as they face financial exhaustion and isolation."
