Generations-old shoe store to shut down after 153 years

A longstanding footwear store that has been part of Worcesters high street for 153 years is preparing to close at the start of the new year. Robin Elt Shoes, situated on The Shambles, has been serving customers since its opening in 1872 but is set to close on 10 January. Jenny Elt, the Managing Director, said, "Sadly, the shop can no longer operate sustainably into the future. There is simply no way to generate the funds required to keep it open." She reflected on the emotional impact of closing a family-run business: "Making this decision has been very difficult for me personally. It is heartbreaking to reach this point."

Longtime customers shared their memories of the store. Liz Evans recalled, "I remember coming here as a child with my mother. The quality of the shoes always drew us into Worcester." She added, "It is really sad to see the end of these traditional family businesses. Places like this offered a personal touch that is hard to find today."

A representative from Worcester City Council expressed regret over the closure, noting that the citys retail sector faces challenges from the rise of online shopping and a shift toward leisure-focused town centres. "The council, together with Worcestershire County Council and Worcester BID, has made significant efforts to support local traders. Worcester combines popular high street brands with independent shops, and we continue to back this mix, including through the Independent Retailers Forum," the spokesperson said.

The council has also invested 4.5 million to enhance the city centre, including improvements to The Shambles, making it more appealing and accessible to visitors.

Meanwhile, the remaining ELT stores in Hereford, Ludlow, Malvern, Leominster, and Totnes will continue operations.
