Have the Steelers already lost the DK Metcalf trade badly?

The Pittsburgh Steelers acquisition of former Seattle Seahawks wide receiver DK Metcalf is starting to look questionable. While media attention has focused on other NFL moves, such as the Raiders struggles post-Geno Smith trade and Pete Carrolls decisions, Metcalfs performance in Pittsburgh has drawn concern.
Andrew Fillipponi, a provocative Pittsburgh sports radio figure, highlighted the disparity in a recent tweet. The Steelers traded a second-round pick for Metcalf, which became Seahawks defensive back Nick Emmanwori. Emmanwori currently leads the league in quarterback pressures by a defensive back, and Seattle boasts a 9-3 record. Meanwhile, Metcalf has posted five consecutive games with fewer than 50 receiving yards.
Further complicating the Steelers situation, they traded wideout George Pickens to the Dallas Cowboys. Pickens has since set career highs in receptions, yards, and touchdowns playing alongside Dak Prescott, unlike the struggling quarterback situation in Pittsburgh.
Metcalf started strong in Pittsburgh with Aaron Rodgers, recording four catches for 83 yards against the Jets and scoring in four straight games, including one against his former team, Seattle. He even matched the entire Seahawks receiving output against the Vikings in one game. However, since November, Metcalfs production has dropped significantly. His last five games include:
- 2 catches, 6 yards vs. Indianapolis Colts
- 3 catches, 35 yards vs. Los Angeles Chargers
- 5 catches, 49 yards vs. Cincinnati Bengals
- 5 catches, 22 yards, plus 12 rushing yards and a rushing TD vs. Chicago Bears
- 3 catches, 32 yards vs. Buffalo Bills
Totaling 18 catches for 144 yards, zero receiving touchdowns, and one rushing touchdown in that span, Metcalfs season totals now stand at 45 receptions, 605 yards, 5 receiving touchdowns, and 1 rushing touchdown. In comparison, Jaxon Smith-Njigba surpassed Metcalfs November output in a single game, and Tyler Lockett gained more yards in the same period after moving to the Raiders.
Metcalf is on track for career lows in receiving yards, yards per target, and possibly receptions per game. He does rank highly in yards after catch (7.5) and converting catches into first downs (75%), but he hasnt cracked the top 15 in major receiving stats. Penalties remain an issue, with multiple flags for unsportsmanlike conduct and offensive pass interference, matching his career high in total penalties.
The Steelers quarterback situation also hampers Metcalf. Aaron Rodgers, 42, and backup Mason Rudolph have struggled to connect on deep throws, limiting opportunities for a receiver of Metcalfs caliber. Despite a lucrative four-year, $132 million contract, his performance has not lived up to the elite-level expectations.
Meanwhile, Seattle appears to be thriving without Metcalf. Nick Emmanworis emergence, the development of Jaxon Smith-Njigba, and Tyler Locketts continued production highlight what Pittsburgh might have sacrificed. Metcalfs limited route tree and struggles in a timing-based offense further complicate his fit in Pittsburgh.
Early indications suggest the Steelers may have lost out in this trade. Metcalfs declining stats, combined with the successes of players the Steelers gave up, hint that the deal could be considered a misstep if trends continue through the rest of the season.
Analysis: Steelers’ DK Metcalf Trade Under Scrutiny
The acquisition of DK Metcalf by the Pittsburgh Steelers is raising questions about the team’s strategy. While initial games showed promise, his production has dropped sharply over the last five weeks, with only 18 catches for 144 yards and no receiving touchdowns.
Comparisons with players the Steelers traded away—George Pickens, Jaxon Smith-Njigba, and Tyler Lockett—underscore the gap in value. Pickens has achieved career highs with the Cowboys, and Seattle’s defensive back Nick Emmanwori, acquired for the same draft pick, leads the league in pressures among defensive backs.
Quarterback performance has also impacted Metcalf’s output. Aaron Rodgers and Mason Rudolph have struggled to connect on deep passes, limiting opportunities for a receiver of Metcalf’s caliber. Despite his $132 million contract, the expected elite-level impact has not materialized.
Unless his production rebounds in the coming games, the trade may be viewed as a misstep. Pittsburgh sacrificed multiple emerging talents for a player whose declining stats and limited role in the offense suggest the risk has not paid off.
