Plans for an HBO drama based on Elon Musks early years at SpaceX have officially been shelved, according to his biographer, Ashlee Vance. The project, which was inspired by Vance's 2015 book Elon Musk: Tesla, SpaceX, and the Quest for a Fantastic Future, will no longer move forward on the network.
Entertainment industry sources reveal that HBO had actually passed on the series years before Vance made his announcement. In a statement on X, Vance expressed disappointment, saying the show "has died" despite having strong scripts and the potential to become a major hit.
Vance explained that the project faced challenges due to Hollywood's uncertainties and repeated changes at HBO. He also suggested that studios may be reluctant to produce content centered on Musk. As a result, the rights to Vances biography have returned to him, leaving open the possibility for another network or studio to adapt it in the future.
The series was first announced in October 2020, with Doug Jung attached as writer and executive producer, alongside Channing Tatum, Reid Carolin, Peter Kiernan, Len Amato, and Vance himself. The show aimed to dramatize the formative years of SpaceX and Musk's rise in the tech industry.
Since the announcement, Musk has become increasingly controversial. He acquired Twitter (renaming it X), endorsed Donald Trump for the 2024 election, and has faced criticism for social media posts and public actions that sparked widespread debate. These developments may have influenced Hollywoods hesitation.
This HBO project is not the only screen adaptation related to Musk in development. Darren Aronofsky is reportedly working on a film based on Walter Isaacsons authorized biography of Musk, while Ike Barinholtz will portray Musk in Luca Guadagnino's Artificial, a biopic about OpenAI founder Sam Altman starring Andrew Garfield.
Analysis: Why the SpaceX HBO Drama Never Launched
From my perspective, the shelving of the HBO series based on Elon Musk's early years at SpaceX reflects both industry caution and the volatility of its subject. Despite Ashlee Vance’s detailed biography providing strong material, repeated internal changes at HBO and Hollywood’s uncertainty over Musk’s public image appear to have halted production.
It is clear that Musk's increasing controversy—ranging from the acquisition of X to political endorsements and polarizing social media behavior—likely contributed to studios' hesitancy. Even with experienced producers and writers attached, the risk of audience backlash seems to have outweighed potential rewards.
With the rights now reverted to Vance, opportunities remain for other studios to adapt the story. Yet, this development underscores the challenge of translating a high-profile, divisive tech figure into mainstream television. The broader context shows that while interest in Musk’s life persists, content creators must navigate both creative ambitions and reputational risks.
