Head of NHS alerts about increasing winter pressure on hospitals

The head of NHS services has cautioned that hospitals are likely to face significant pressure during the winter months due to a rise in seasonal illnesses and viral infections. Frankie Swords, medical director at the NHS Suffolk and North East Essex Integrated Care Board, advised the public to take proactive steps to maintain their health and wellbeing ahead of the holiday period.

People are being encouraged to schedule vaccinations, prepare for minor illnesses and injuries, and seek guidance via the NHS 111 service when needed.

"Although Christmas is still a few weeks away, our services are already experiencing heavy demand. Now is the ideal moment for individuals to plan ahead and consider measures to protect themselves," Dr. Swords explained.

Vaccinations remain available for Covid-19 and influenza, providing protection not only to recipients but also to older and vulnerable individuals who may be seen during the festive season. Regular handwashing is also recommended to limit the spread of infections such as norovirus.

Other guidance includes keeping a well-stocked medicine cabinet with essentials like paracetamol, cough and cold remedies, and plasters. Residents are urged to seek advice from pharmacies or NHS 111, which also offers mental health support.

Health and care teams in Norfolk and Waveney have emphasized the importance of helping patients leave hospitals promptly once they are well enough, to reduce pressure on facilities.

Additionally, industrial action by resident doctors in England is scheduled from 07:00 GMT on 17 December to 07:00 on 22 December. GP clinics and pharmacies will continue to operate, and patients are advised to attend appointments unless otherwise instructed.
