A fresh overnight bus service has launched across Europe, linking several of the continents most popular tourist hubs. Operated by the Swiss transport firm Twiliner, the initiative seeks to bridge "the comfort gap in long-distance travel."
The sleeper bus began running in November, with stops in Switzerland, Luxembourg, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Spain. It offers environmentally conscious travellers an alternative to short-haul flights, reducing carbon emissions while maintaining convenience.
Twiliner reports that its coaches are as eco-friendly as trains, cutting around 85% of CO2e emissions compared to flying. Vehicles use HVO diesel, a sustainable fuel produced from recycled fats and vegetable oils.
First-Class Comfort on Wheels
Comfort is a key focus for Twiliner, with seats modeled on airplane business-class chairs that fully recline into beds at the touch of a button. The 21 seats18 on the upper deck and 3 on the lowercome with pillows, blankets, individual reading lights, electrical outlets, tables, and complimentary internet. A small storage compartment keeps personal belongings close.
The lower deck features a spacious bathroom and changing area, along with a snack bar offering light refreshments. Complimentary coffee and water are available to passengers.
Luggage and Travel Guidelines
Passengers can bring one large suitcase (max 23kg; 80 x 50 x 35 cm) and one carry-on item (max 5kg; 50 x 30 x 20 cm). Special items like bicycles, surfboards, and ski equipment are allowed if reserved in advance. Children under five are not permitted, while older children must be accustomed to long-distance travel and maintain a quiet environment.
Routes and Future Expansion
At launch, Twiliner offered two routes: Zurich to Amsterdam via Basel, Luxembourg, Brussels, and Rotterdam; and Zurich to Barcelona with a stop in Girona. Services operate multiple times weekly, with fares starting at about 180 one-way, and are expected to increase to daily runs next year. Only driver change stops are scheduled during the journey.
The long-term vision is to establish a comprehensive overnight bus network covering 25 major European cities by 2028, complementing existing night train services.
Analysis: Twiliner's Overnight Bus Initiative
The launch of Twiliner's overnight bus service marks a notable development in European long-distance travel. By linking Switzerland, Luxembourg, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Spain, the company positions itself as an eco-friendly alternative to short-haul flights.
From an environmental perspective, the use of HVO diesel and the claim of 85% lower CO2e emissions than flying signals a growing trend in sustainable transport. For passengers, the fully reclining seats, private amenities, and onboard services reflect a clear focus on comfort and convenience, targeting travelers who prioritize both sustainability and quality.
Operationally, the service is structured around two initial routes, with multiple weekly departures and plans to expand to daily runs. Twiliner's long-term objective to cover 25 major cities by 2028 indicates a strategy that complements, rather than competes with, existing night train networks.
Overall, this initiative may reshape perceptions of overnight travel in Europe, positioning sleeper buses as a practical, environmentally conscious, and comfortable alternative to air travel.
