Spain, Ireland, the Netherlands, and Slovakia have announced they will not participate in the 2026 Eurovision Song Contest following a decision by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) to confirm Israels entry during its general assembly on Thursday, December 4.

The EBU had initially delayed a vote after Israel and Hamas reached a ceasefire agreement in October. The organization stated, A large majority of Members agreed that there was no need for a further vote on participation and that the Eurovision Song Contest 2026 should proceed as planned, with the additional safeguards in place. The assembly only approved rules aimed at preventing governments or third parties from influencing entries.

Irish broadcaster RT led the withdrawals, explaining that Irelands participation remains unconscionable given the appalling loss of lives in Gaza and the humanitarian crisis there. Following RT, Spains RTVE, the Netherlands Avrotros, and Slovenias RTVSLO also decided to pull out. Together, these four countries have achieved 14 Eurovision wins, with Ireland holding the record for the most victories at seven, tied with Sweden.

Earlier in October, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz warned of a boycott if Israel were excluded, stating, I think its a scandal that this is even being discussed. Israel has a place there. Austrias ORF network has also expressed support for Israels participation. Austrian singer JJ, who won this years contest, represents the country hosting the 70th Eurovision in Vienna in May 2026.

Israel, a four-time Eurovision winner, last claimed victory in 2018 with Nettas Toy. The nation had to modify the lyrics of its 2024 entry, October Rain, following objections from European artists and officials. Russia has been barred from participating since 2022 due to its invasion of Ukraine.

Analysis of Eurovision 2026 Participation Controversy

The decision by Spain, Ireland, the Netherlands, and Slovakia to withdraw from the 2026 Eurovision Song Contest marks a significant moment in the contest's history. These countries’ actions come in response to the European Broadcasting Union’s (EBU) decision to confirm Israel’s participation despite the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Their collective decision underscores the deep political tensions influencing cultural events on the global stage.

The EBU’s initial delay in voting, following the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas, suggested a hope for a more balanced approach to the conflict. However, with the recent confirmation that the Eurovision will proceed as planned, the withdrawal of these four nations demonstrates how geopolitics continues to play a role in international arts events. Ireland’s broadcaster RTÉ was the first to announce their withdrawal, citing the appalling loss of lives in Gaza as their primary reason for non-participation. Spain, the Netherlands, and Slovenia followed suit, amplifying the controversy surrounding the event.

These withdrawals are not just symbolic; they also carry significant historical weight. Together, these four countries have won 14 Eurovision titles, with Ireland holding the record of seven wins, alongside Sweden. This historical context only adds to the gravity of their decision, as it signifies a protest not just against Israel's participation, but against the broader political climate surrounding the event.

On the other hand, Germany and Austria have voiced support for Israel’s continued participation, with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz notably warning of a boycott if Israel were excluded. This divide reflects the differing stances within the European political landscape regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, revealing the ongoing struggle between diplomatic neutrality and public sentiment in international forums like Eurovision.

As the situation develops, it remains to be seen how these withdrawals will affect the dynamics of the contest and whether further countries will follow suit. The 2026 Eurovision will undoubtedly be remembered as one of the most politically charged contests in its history.
