Jeffrey Epstein's estate battles to protect more than 250 emails with top Goldman Sachs lawyer

The estate of Jeffrey Epstein is invoking attorney-client privilege to block the release of 277 emails exchanged with Kathryn Ruemmler, arguing they are legally protected and should not be disclosed in ongoing litigation.

According to newly released court filings, Ruemmler now Goldman Sachs chief legal officer discussed multiple legal matters with Epstein, including lawsuits filed by women accusing him of sexual abuse. The privilege log, spanning roughly 500 pages, lists messages sent between October 2014 and June 2019, just weeks before Epsteins arrest on federal sex-trafficking charges.

The filings suggest Ruemmler provided legal guidance or acted in a professional capacity for Epstein while working as co-chair of the white-collar defense and investigations group at Latham & Watkins, despite the firm previously stating Epstein was not a client. Ruemmler herself has never publicly clarified whether she served as his attorney personally, though she has said she regrets her association with him. Goldman Sachs has described their connection as professional.

Legal Battle Between Epsteins Accusers and His Estate

The emails in question are separate from the communications released in November by the House Oversight Committee, which showed Ruemmler seeking personal advice from Epstein, receiving introductions to influential contacts, and exchanging political commentary with him.

Some of the messages listed in the privilege log include Ruemmler on email threads with Epsteins other lawyers, such as Darren Indyke, Alan Dershowitz, Ken Starr, Martin Weinberg, and Roy Black. Portions of a few emails made public were previously redacted for privilege.

Epstein, who maintained relationships with numerous high-profile figures across finance, politics, and global society, died in jail in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex-trafficking charges. His estate is currently facing a lawsuit from several accusers who say estate co-executors Indyke and Richard Kahn helped enable Epsteins misconduct. The executors deny the allegations.

The privilege log was originally filed under seal in September, with redacted public versions released this week. It briefly summarizes each email the estate argues should remain confidential, without revealing their full content. Attorneys for the accusers say the estate is withholding essential information that could reveal how Epstein operated his network of abuse.

Ruemmler's Role and the Scope of the Emails

Earlier this year, congressional records revealed Epstein had named Ruemmler as an alternate executor in a 2019 draft of his will, though she was later replaced in the final version by former Gates advisor Boris Nikolic. Indyke and Kahn ultimately became co-executors.

Descriptions in the privilege log indicate Ruemmler addressed a wide range of Epsteins legal challenges, including numerous civil suits from accusers, ongoing criminal complaints, attempts to overturn his Florida plea arrangement, and litigation involving Virginia Giuffre against Ghislaine Maxwell. None of the listed emails pertain to estate planning, a category used for correspondence involving Indyke.

One email from April 2019 is described as attorney client communication regarding strategy of defense of legal claims against Jeffrey Epstein. Another from October 2014 is summarized as attorney client communication providing information at legal request regarding sexual assault claims, bearing the subject line CONFIDENTIAL - JE.
