Kennedy Center Director's Outburst Following Leak of Poor Ticket Sales

Ric Grenell, a close ally of Donald Trump and the recently appointed head of the Kennedy Center, launched into an intense outburst on X after a dismissed staff member verified declining ticket sales and revealed internal performance figures linked to his leadership.

Grenells reaction followed an article from The Athletic, which presented sharp drops in subscriptions and ticket revenue since his arrival. The report detailed significant unrest inside the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, where President Trump initiated a sweeping leadership overhaul earlier this year by removing long standing board members, assuming the role of chairman, dismissing president Deborah Rutter, and placing Grenell in charge.

The piece included comments from former dance director Jane Raleigh, whom Grenell removed in August. Raleigh stated that audience numbers had slipped and subscription renewals were roughly half of normal expectations. Grenell responded online by accusing the publications reporters of promoting biased narratives and criticized their coverage as politically motivated.

He also claimed the reporters were upset over a major agreement with FIFA for hosting the 2026 World Cup draw at the Kennedy Center. A contract obtained by The Athletic indicated that FIFA received access to the Concert Hall and other facilities without a rental fee. According to spokeswoman Roma Daravi, the arrangement included a donation and sponsorship components totaling several million dollars.

Grenell dismissed Raleighs account by describing her as ineffective in her role and argued that she lacked financial discipline. Raleigh told The Athletic that the downturn began shortly after the new leadership structure was imposed.

Grenell further accused the outlets journalists of misunderstanding arts funding, insisting that institutions nationwide were struggling and that the Kennedy Centers new direction represented a necessary adjustment. He asserted that the organization had secured substantial fundraising commitments and reduced expenses through staffing cuts.

The Athletic noted that the leadership shift has unsettled many within the arts community. Some performers withdrew from scheduled appearances, and longstanding patrons reportedly began avoiding the venue. A frequent visitor described the situation as deeply unfortunate.

FIFA is set to introduce a new peace related award during the World Cup draw, intended to honor individuals who work to foster unity. FIFA president Gianni Infantino stated that the recognition is meant to highlight efforts that support reconciliation and bring communities together.
