Lamborghini Receives 'Lambo.com' for Free After Man's $75 Million Demand

An Arizona resident hoping to cash in on his Lambo.com domain ended up empty-handed, after a U.S. district court ruled in favor of Lamborghini, granting the luxury carmaker the domain at no cost. The legal battle left the man with only court expenses and the loss of his original investment.

The situation began in February 2018 when Richard Blair bought the domain Lambo.com for $10,000. In April 2022, Lamborghini filed a complaint with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) Arbitration and Mediation Center, seeking to transfer the domain under the Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy (UDRP). By August of that year, WIPO determined Blair had acted in bad faith and ordered the domain be handed over to Lamborghini.

Blair tried to overturn this decision through a lawsuit, but court filings revealed a history of speculative pricing. After acquiring the domain, he listed it for sale multiple times: $1.13 million in August 2020, $1.5 million in December 2020, $3.3 million in January 2021, $12 million in September 2021, then 50 million (around $58 million) in August 2022, and finally $75 million in September 2023. Offers were reportedly made, but Blair rejected them all.

After purchasing the domain, Blair began calling himself Lambo online and claimed the name referred to Lamb rather than the car brand. He even redirected Lambo.com to a blog post declaring, I AM LAMBO of LAMBO.com and I will defend, defeat and humiliate those endeavoring to steal any of my domain name brandsincluding my moniker.

The court ruled that Blair had no legal claim to the Lambo name, noting that he adopted it only after buying the domain. The decision highlighted that he had not developed the site, disparaged Lamborghini, and attempted to profit from the automakers reputation. Blairs lawsuit was dismissed, and Lamborghini now owns Lambo.com.
