Luigi Mangione to Appear in Court on 1-Year Anniversary of Health Insurance CEO Brian Thompson's Death

Luigi Mangione is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday, December 4, marking one year since the fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in New York City.

Thompson, who became CEO in 2021 after joining UnitedHealthcare in 2004, was shot outside a Midtown Manhattan hotel on the morning of December 4, 2024. He was heading to an investors conference and had arrived early when a masked assailant struck.

Mangione, 27, faces second-degree murder charges in connection with Thompson's death. This weeks proceedings are focused on both sides calling witnesses and presenting key evidence. Mangiones defense is seeking to exclude certain materials, including statements he made after his arrest and items recovered from a backpack, such as a 3D-printed pistol and a notebook containing an anti-health insurance manifesto outlining a plot against an insurance executive.

During court sessions earlier this week, prosecutors presented bodycam footage from Mangione's arrest at a McDonald's in Altoona, Pennsylvania, showing him calmly eating breakfast as officers confirmed they had apprehended a suspect in one of the nation's most high-profile murder cases. Additionally, 911 recordings and testimony from prison guards highlighted conversations and potentially incriminating statements Mangione made while in solitary confinement.

Mangione previously faced first-degree murder charges with a terrorism enhancement, which were later dropped. He is also facing a federal murder charge that could carry the death penalty. He has pleaded not guilty and is expected to remain in court throughout the week as the trial progresses, with both prosecution and defense presenting evidence and witness testimony.
