Thomas Benskis emerging media company, Lumina Media, has obtained a significant shareholding in SunnyMarch, the production company co-founded by Benedict Cumberbatch and producer Adam Ackland in 2013, according to filings in the U.K.
Since its inception, SunnyMarch has produced several films and television projects, including the drama The Thing with Feathers, where Cumberbatch plays a grieving father, and the comedy-drama The Electrical Life of Louis Wain, also starring the actor.
Recent documents from the U.K. business registrar, Companies House, indicate that Ackland, who previously held over 75% of SunnyMarch Group Limited, no longer has significant control of the company. Lumina Studios Group, controlled by Benski, now holds between 25% and 50% of the shares, though Ackland remains the companys sole director.
Additionally, both Cumberbatch and Ackland have stepped back from being major shareholders in SunnyMarch Holdings Limited, shifting ownership to Sunnymarch Group Limited. They continue as directors alongside Anton CEO Sebastien Raybaud, who acquired a minority stake in 2021. Around the same time Lumina assumed its stake, two financial obligations registered by Anton against SunnyMarch Limited, a subsidiary of SunnyMarch Holdings, were cleared.
Highlighting SunnyMarchs creative focus, Cumberbatch explained that the company aims to produce character-driven films with budgets ranging from 9 million to 20 million, though he acknowledged the growing difficulty of financing such projects. Our USP is to try to match quality with commerciality that understands the kind of films that we loved growing up watching, he said.
Lumina, officially launching this week and supported by investors including Magnus Rausing, Charles Dorfman, and Philip Van Sandwijk, has already collaborated with Carrousel Studios, led by Omar Sy, and Wayward Films, headed by Yann Demange.
Analysis: Lumina Media’s Strategic Stake in SunnyMarch
The recent filings at Companies House reveal a notable shift in SunnyMarch’s ownership structure. Thomas Benski’s Lumina Media has acquired a substantial stake, now holding between 25% and 50% of SunnyMarch Group Limited, signaling a strategic investment in content-driven film production.
Adam Ackland, previously the majority shareholder, no longer retains significant control, though he continues as SunnyMarch’s sole director. Benedict Cumberbatch and Ackland have reduced their direct ownership in SunnyMarch Holdings, consolidating shares under SunnyMarch Group Limited alongside Anton CEO Sebastien Raybaud, who maintains a minority stake.
This move coincides with the clearing of financial obligations registered by Anton against SunnyMarch Limited, suggesting Lumina’s investment may strengthen the company’s financial stability and operational flexibility. The strategic collaboration positions SunnyMarch to continue producing character-driven films with budgets of £9–20 million, despite acknowledged challenges in financing such projects.
Lumina Media’s launch, supported by prominent investors and collaborations with Carrousel Studios and Wayward Films, indicates a broader ambition to integrate creative production with financial backing. This development reflects a growing trend of media companies seeking equity partnerships to secure high-quality, commercially viable content.
