Makers of Somerset House ice rink unveil new skating area

A renowned company known for creating ice rinks for Londons Somerset House and ITV's Dancing on Ice has unveiled a new skating area in Northampton. The 14-meter by 22-meter rink, funded by the local council, is now open in the towns Market Square and will welcome visitors until 4 January 2026.

This ice rink marks the third major event in the renovated Market Square, following Diwali festivities and Northamptonshire Day celebrations.

Mark Arnull, leader of the Reform UK-led West Northamptonshire Council, described the rink as "impressive" and expressed hope that it would foster a sense of community among residents.

The Market Square underwent a 13.5 million refurbishment and reopened last year, with the council recently approving an additional 1 million to complete the project. Arnull highlighted that despite negative press regarding costs, the ice rink demonstrates "the value of using the space and achieving a return on investment" and is something "residents can be proud of."

The rink was designed and installed by Iskate, a company with a global portfolio including major events like the Tokyo Olympics. Ian Moynes, the projects build manager, explained that installation began in November, using a reverse underfloor heating system along with aluminium pipes and glycol to maintain the ice.

The skating area is situated alongside existing market stalls, providing a new attraction for locals and visitors alike. Market trader Steve Reid praised the project, noting that nothing like it had been done in Northampton before and commending the council for the initiative.
