Margot Robbie has come to the defense of Emerald Fennells upcoming adaptation of Wuthering Heights, addressing the debates sparked by the films casting choices. In a recent interview with British Vogue, the actress expressed support for Fennells decision to cast her and Jacob Elordi in the lead roles of Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff.

The adaptation, based on Emily Bronts 1847 novel, has faced criticism from fans due to differences between the books characters and the actors portraying them. In the original story, Catherine is a teenage brunette, while Robbie is a 35-year-old blonde. Fennell clarified that the character was aged up for the film to her late 20s or early 30s.

Robbie acknowledged the backlash, stating, I understand why people are concerned. But nothing will make sense until they actually see the film.

Elordis casting as Heathcliff has generated additional controversy, since the character is described as dark-skinned in Bronts novel. Despite this, Fennell revealed that Elordi inspired her adaptation after she noticed him on the set of their previous film, Saltburn, and immediately envisioned him as Heathcliff.

Robbie defended Elordi, saying, He embodies Heathcliff. Just waittrust me, viewers will be pleased. Heathcliff has been portrayed by legendary actors from Laurence Olivier to Tom Hardy, and Jacob brings a new intensity. I genuinely believe he is our generations Daniel Day-Lewis.

Fennell also spoke passionately about casting Robbie as Catherine. She explained, Catherine is complexwillful, provocative, and at times cruel. We needed someone who could command attention and make audiences understand why they love her despite her flaws. Margot possesses that rare star power and intensity that Catherine demands.

The movies marketing has also attracted attention for its sensual imagery. Robbie addressed this, emphasizing that while the film contains provocative and sexual elements, it is primarily a sweeping romantic story. Its a major romance epic, reminiscent of films like The Notebook or The English Patient. Emeralds direction ensures it evokes a strong, physical emotional response, whether through love or heartbreak, she said.

Wuthering Heights is scheduled for release in theaters on February 13 through Warner Bros.
