Maurice DuBois Leaving Position as Co-Anchor of 'CBS Evening News' on Dec. 18

Maurice DuBois announced that he will be leaving his position as co-anchor of the CBS Evening News on December 18. This departure follows leadership changes within the news division and the acquisition of CBS's parent company, Paramount, by Skydance.

In an Instagram post on Thursday, DuBois reflected on his career, saying, It has been the honor of a lifetime. 21 years in total, including my years at WCBS-TV in New York City. What a privilege to be welcomed into your homes night after night, sharing the news and meeting remarkable individuals while telling their stories. I leave with gratitude, treasured relationships, and unforgettable memories. A couple of weeks to go; until then, see you on The CBS Evening News every night at 6:30.

His co-anchor, John Dickerson, had previously announced he would also exit CBS News at the end of the year. The CBS Evening News is expected to undergo significant changes under the new editor-in-chief, Bari Weiss. A CBS News representative has not yet provided comments on the matter.

DuBois and Dickerson had been co-anchors for less than a year following Norah ODonnells departure. During their tenure, the broadcast adopted a new format that highlighted correspondent-driven stories. Despite these adjustments, the program has continued to rank third in viewership, with limited audience growth. Recent modifications have focused on breaking news coverage, similar to rival broadcasts such as ABC World News Tonight with David Muir and NBC Nightly News with Tom Llamas.

Before joining the national network, DuBois anchored at WCBS-TV in New York, where he began in 2004. His departure marks the end of a distinguished chapter in local and national broadcast journalism.

Analysis: The Departure of Maurice DuBois from CBS Evening News

The announcement of Maurice DuBois leaving his position as co-anchor of the CBS Evening News on December 18 signals a pivotal moment for the program and the network as a whole. After 21 years in broadcast journalism, including his time at WCBS-TV in New York City, DuBois reflects on a career marked by memorable stories and connections with his audience. His decision to step down follows a series of leadership changes at CBS News and the recent acquisition of Paramount by Skydance, signaling broader shifts within the network.

DuBois and his co-anchor, John Dickerson, who also announced his departure, had a relatively short tenure as the faces of the CBS Evening News. Their time together lasted less than a year after Norah O'Donnell's exit, during which the broadcast introduced a new format with a focus on correspondent-driven stories. Despite these efforts, CBS Evening News has struggled to gain significant viewership, continuing to rank third in the evening news race behind ABC and NBC. With the network's new editor-in-chief, Bari Weiss, expected to make substantial changes, the future direction of the program remains uncertain.

The departure of DuBois and Dickerson highlights the ongoing turbulence within CBS News, which has yet to release an official statement on the matter. With shifting leadership and changing audience preferences, the question remains whether CBS can redefine itself in a competitive evening news landscape.
