The iconic CBS Evening News is set for a major transformation in 2026 as Maurice DuBois, the program's remaining co-anchor, announced he will step down on December 18. DuBois, who co-anchored alongside John Dickerson, held the position for less than a year.

He informed CBS staff of his decision on Thursday morning, stating, "December 18th will be my final broadcast at CBS News." Reflecting on his 21-year career with CBS, including his time at New York affiliate WCBS-TV, DuBois shared, "It has been an extraordinary privilege to enter your homes nightly, report the news, meet remarkable individuals, and share their stories."

Tom Cibrowski, president and executive editor of CBS News, commented on DuBois departure: "Maurice has always embodied the best of CBS News and Stations. We deeply appreciate his impactful work at both CBS News New York and the CBS Evening News. He is highly respected by all of us, and we wish him continued success."

DuBois is the latest prominent figure to leave CBS News, signaling a significant overhaul for CBS Evening News under the leadership of Bari Weiss, the networks new editor-in-chief. John Dickerson, who announced his exit in October, will remain with CBS News until the holiday season.

This marks the second substantial revamp of the program in under a year, yet the latest edition has struggled to boost ratings and stabilize following the abrupt departure of former program overseer Bill Owens in April.

Analysis: The Changing Landscape of CBS Evening News

The announcement of Maurice DuBois stepping down as co-anchor of CBS Evening News on December 18, 2026, marks yet another chapter in the ongoing evolution of the program. DuBois, who has had a long tenure with CBS, is part of a broader trend of shake-ups within the network's flagship news broadcast. With John Dickerson's exit earlier this year and the unexpected departure of Bill Owens in April, CBS Evening News is clearly undergoing significant changes under new leadership.

While DuBois has been a respected figure at CBS for over two decades, his departure leaves an uncertain future for the program, which has struggled to gain traction in the ratings. The frequent changes in the anchor lineup and leadership, especially the switch to Bari Weiss as editor-in-chief, signal that CBS is likely recalibrating its strategy for the evening news format. With these shifts, it remains to be seen whether CBS Evening News can regain its former prominence in an increasingly competitive media landscape.

DuBois’ departure is just one piece of a larger puzzle for CBS News as it grapples with revitalizing its evening news programming. As the industry continues to evolve, CBS faces the challenge of balancing tradition with the need for fresh perspectives. The question remains: will these ongoing changes lead to a resurgence or further decline for CBS Evening News?
