The mayor of West Yorkshire has emphasized that removing the two-child benefit limit will provide crucial support to families who are employed yet still face financial hardships. Tracy Brabin, representing Labour, discussed the issue during a BBC Radio Leeds segment, answering listeners questions on various local topics.
Removing the Benefit Cap
Brabin described the policy change as essential, explaining that families with three children often face poverty despite being employed. She pointed out that in some areas of West Yorkshire, half of all children live in poverty, raising concerns about their ability to access opportunities as the economy grows.
Last week, the chancellor announced the end of the rule limiting Universal Credit and tax credits claims to only the first two children, aiming to ease financial pressure on larger families.
Mayoral Investment and Economic Growth
The mayor praised the recent Budget, calling it transformative for local leaders. She highlighted that Greater Manchester's growth now surpasses the national average, with West Yorkshire ranking second. The new Budget allows for integrated funding settlements, giving mayors the authority to allocate resources across their regions more flexibly.
Tourist Levy Plans
Brabin supported proposals for a small charge on overnight visitors. The collected funds would be reinvested into local infrastructure and major events, improving transport and tourism facilities. She noted that West Yorkshire welcomed 73 million visitors in the past year, and even a modest levy could enhance attractions in towns like Ilkley, Shipley, and Haworth.
White Rose Station Update
The mayor expressed urgency about resuming work on the White Rose station in Leeds, which has been stalled since 2024. The project, funded jointly by the West Yorkshire Combined Authority and private investors, may see contractors return in 2026, though no definite timeline can be confirmed.
Climate Diplomacy in Brazil
Brabin defended her recent trip to a climate summit in Brazil, invited by former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg. She described the visit as an opportunity to collaborate with international mayors on climate initiatives and to boost local job creation in the climate economy, estimated to be worth 8 billion to the region.
