"Being part of this family is truly meaningful to me. Jordan Brand has influenced sports culture for decades and continues to set the standard at every level," said BMX star Nigel Sylvester, who presented the FNAA Brand of the Year Award to Jordan Brand on Wednesday evening.
Both Sylvester and Jordan Brand president Sarah Mensah emphasized that Michael Jordan's legendary accomplishments remain the cornerstone of the brands identity, inspiring its direction and vision.
Sylvester reflected on his youth in Queens, recalling how watching his older brother and cousins in their Jordans sparked his lifelong connection to the Air Jordan 1. The sneaker became a central inspiration for his BMX career, influencing everything from pedal technique to flexibility and style. Since 2021, Sylvester has collaborated on multiple projects with Nike and Jordan Brand.
"MJ, the GOAT, has achieved so much both on and off the court," Sylvester said. "His excellence continues to resonate through the brand. The upcoming year promises incredible stories and innovative products designed to support athletes and creators. Jordan Brand honors its legacy while looking boldly to the future."
Mensah, while accepting the award, highlighted the culture and teamwork behind Jordan Brands success. "This recognition reflects the spirit that built our brand as much as the hard work of our teams at every level," she said. She added that Jordan Brand is committed to helping individuals unlock their potential: "We believe everyone has greatness inside, and our mission is to help express itto find your inner Michael Jordan."
The Brand of the Year award coincides with the 40th anniversary of the Air Jordan 1, one of the most iconic basketball shoes ever. While Sylvester has recently sparked conversations with his Air Jordan 4 Brick by Brick release, NFL quarterback Jalen Hurts also highlighted Jordan Brands relevance today, winning his first Super Bowl with the Philadelphia Eagles wearing AJ11s in the first half and AJ1s in the second.
At Wednesdays ceremony, Sylvester and Spike Lee wore matching Jordan sneakers to celebrate the brands legacy.
For 39 years, the annual FN Achievement Awardscommonly called the "Shoe Oscars"have honored top style icons, standout brands, emerging talents, and industry veterans. The 2025 event is supported by Caleres, Listrak, Nordstrom, Skechers, Vibram, and Wolverine Worldwide.
Author's Commentary: Jordan Brand’s Enduring Influence
Being recognized as the FNAA Brand of the Year underscores Jordan Brand’s lasting impact on both sports and culture. Nigel Sylvester’s remarks highlight how deeply personal and formative the brand has been for athletes across disciplines, not only in basketball but in BMX and beyond. His reflections connect the legacy of Michael Jordan to the lived experiences of a new generation of athletes.
Sarah Mensah’s acceptance emphasizes that Jordan Brand’s success is built on teamwork and culture, not solely on a legendary figure. This dual focus on heritage and ongoing innovation positions the brand to continue inspiring creators and athletes alike. The celebration of the Air Jordan 1’s 40th anniversary further cements its role as a cultural milestone.
Events like the FNAA illustrate the broader relevance of Jordan Brand today, from high-profile collaborations to athletes like Jalen Hurts winning a Super Bowl while wearing signature Jordans. The brand’s ability to bridge legacy, performance, and style ensures it remains a standard-bearer in both sports and fashion.
