NS and CPKC working to resolve disagreements regarding Meridian Speedway

NS and CPKC are actively working to resolve ongoing issues regarding the Meridian Speedway, a vital rail corridor jointly operated by NS and KCS since 2006. The partnership, which saw NS invest over $300 million in infrastructure, has recently been marked by disagreements between the two railroads over operational restrictions and their impact on service delivery.

NS has expressed frustration with CPKCs decision to impose restrictions on train length, which they claim has led to customer delays. "CPKC promised highway diversions to rail as part of their merger proposal, but instead, we are experiencing exactly the opposite on the Meridian Speedway," NS stated.

Despite these tensions, NS and CPKC have made progress in resolving the issues. Following NSs formal filing on September 30, 2025, CPKC agreed to temporarily reverse its decision on the train length restriction. Both companies are now working together to find a solution that accommodates their operational needs and ensures adequate crew availability to handle NS traffic.

In addition to these measures, NS has sought private sector options for resolving the dispute, including holding multiple Joint Operating Committee meetings and considering a third-party audit of operational performance. Both companies remain focused on negotiating a resolution that will improve efficiency and minimize disruptions to service.

The Meridian Speedway venture continues to be a key part of both NS and KCS's strategic rail operations, with the ongoing discussions highlighting the complexities of managing shared rail infrastructure and the challenges of coordinating operations between competing railroads.
