OpenAI has distributed $40.5 million (34.74 million) to over 200 nonprofit organizations in its first round of funding since reestablishing its nonprofit arm as the OpenAI Foundation in October. The foundation has pledged $25 billion (21.45 billion) to support health research and initiatives focused on AI resilience, aimed at reducing potential risks of artificial intelligence.
While the timeline for distributing the full $25 billion has not been specified, OpenAI previously announced in July that it would provide $50 million (42.89 million) in grants, following recommendations from an advisory commission tasked with guiding the organization toward safe AI development for humanity. An additional $9.5 million (8.15 million) in grants will be awarded in the coming months, based on board recommendations.
The grants are unrestricted, giving nonprofits flexibility in their use. OpenAI encouraged applications for projects promoting AI literacy, enhancing civic engagement, or creating economic opportunities. Eligible organizations were those with annual budgets between $500,000 and $10 million (429,0008.58 million). More than 3,000 nonprofits applied, with a selection process involving external advisers and final approval by the board.
The recipients largely represent sectors outside technology, including journalism, performing arts, and community programs. Among them, Pittsburghs Three Rivers Young Peoples Orchestras received $90,000 (77,200), roughly 10% of its yearly budget. Executive Director Lindsey Nova expressed surprise at the award. Her organization already incorporates ChatGPT as a tool to assist in drafting and planning. The funding will support research into two apps: one for recording rehearsals with bookmarks triggered by the conductor, aiming to generate notes paired with rehearsal clips to aid students practice. Nova emphasized that technology will complement, not replace, the educational experience.
The grant application process involved collaboration with Adam Hertzman of Adartova, a small philanthropic consulting firm. Hertzman highlighted that many small and mid-sized nonprofits were likely unaware of OpenAIs open grant call, making the opportunity particularly valuable.
OpenAI, founded as a nonprofit in 2015, later established a for-profit subsidiary, now one of the most highly valued startups worldwide. In October, it formally became a public benefit corporation, retaining its nonprofit board as the highest authority. Recently, the for-profit division announced a new call for research proposals focused on AI and mental health, primarily for nonprofits, with $2 million (1.72 million) available by mid-January. This comes amid multiple lawsuits related to ChatGPTs potential impact on users mental health.
