Peacock's new series The Paper aims to capture the comedic spirit of The Office through the lens of a local newsroom. The mockumentary centers on the Toledo Truth Teller, a once-prominent newspaper now cohabiting with a toilet paper company under the same parent corporation.
The story follows Ned Sampson (Domhnall Gleeson), an enthusiastic new editor determined to transform the outlet from a clickbait factory into a serious journalistic publication. The series will likely resonate with current and former journalists, who will recognize the struggles of maintaining relevance and integrity in a dwindling newsroom.
One particularly striking scene depicts Sampson walking through the deserted offices of the old news building, evoking a sense of dj vu for anyone who has witnessed layoffs and staff reductions firsthand. The Paper mimics the documentary style of The Office, but while the latter focused on employees stuck in meaningless roles, the reporters at the Truth Teller are convinced their work carries significance.
The show shines most when highlighting the contrast between journalists' perception of themselves as guardians of democracy and the often trivial nature of their day-to-day reportingsuch as investigating the cause of a massive sewer blockage by speaking with a sanitation worker. Despite this, much of the first season struggles to consistently hit comedic notes, with only a few characters reliably providing humor.
Overall, The Paper offers a satirical look at the challenges faced by small newspapers, blending moments of genuine workplace insight with uneven comedic execution.
