Poundland has confirmed that it will shut two of its stores in Northampton by the end of December. The closures follow the companys acquisition in June by investment firm Gordon Brothers for 1, which announced plans to close around 100 stores to prevent the retailer from entering administration.
The Sixfields location will cease operations on 31 December, while the Weston Favell branch is set to close on 19 December. Other Poundland shops in Northampton, as well as outlets in Kettering (including a Pep & Co), Wellingborough, and Corby, will remain open.
So far, 57 stores have already been closed as Poundland focuses on shuttering its least-profitable locations. The restructuring programme aims to reduce the UK store count from roughly 800 at the start to between 650 and 700 once completed. The company also plans to negotiate lower rents and close stores where agreements cannot be reached.
Darren MacDonald, Poundlands UK country manager, acknowledged the impact on customers, stating, "We know how disappointing it is when we leave a store."
