Russian President Vladimir Putin has arrived in Delhi for discussions with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, coinciding with the annual bilateral summit between the two nations.
This marks Putins first trip to India since the launch of Russias extensive military campaign in Ukraine in 2022. The visit is being seen as a clear message that Western attempts to isolate Moscow have not succeeded.
Putin was greeted personally by Modi at the airport on Thursday evening, an unusual gesture that underscores the importance of this meeting. The leaders are scheduled for talks on Friday, with several agreements expected to be finalized.
The visit occurs shortly after the United States imposed an extra 25% tariff on India for its continued purchases of Russian oil. It also comes amid American initiatives to mediate peace in the region, even as Putin reiterated that Ukraine must retreat from the Donbas region or face its annexation by Russia.
