QQQ vs ONEQ: Are There Any Actual Distinctions Between These ETFs?

For investors seeking a hands-off way to invest in major technology companies and the ongoing artificial intelligence boom, there are several ETFs that cater to this goal. While all tech-focused ETFs share similarities, some are purely tech-oriented, whereas others include significant exposure to additional sectors. For anyone looking to invest in technology through an ETF, minimizing fees is essential.

Here, we examine two popular Nasdaq-based ETFs, helping growth-focused investors understand their differences and similarities. The Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) and the Fidelity Nasdaq Composite Index ETF (ONEQ) track the Nasdaq 100 and Nasdaq Composite, respectively. Although performance can be similar, one ETF may better suit a particular investor profile.

Key Details

  • Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) tracks the Nasdaq 100 with a 0.2% expense ratio. Over the past decade, it gained 453%.
  • Fidelity Nasdaq Composite Index ETF (ONEQ) includes over 1,000 stocks compared to QQQ's 100 and returned 370% in the same period.
  • Both ETFs increased by 15.6% over the past year, despite differences in index breadth.

Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ)

The QQQ, sometimes called "the Q's," offers exposure to the 100 largest non-financial companies on the Nasdaq. This includes mega-cap tech firms and a few non-tech companies, providing a growth boost at a low expense ratio of 0.2%. The Nasdaq 100 has outperformed the S&P 500 over the past decade, climbing more than 370% versus the S&P 500's 238%.

The QQQ can amplify market movements, both positive and negative. Historical events, like the dot-com crash, show that heavy tech exposure can lead to steep declines. The fund's reliance on major tech names, especially the "Magnificent Seven," is a double-edged sword: it drives growth when these companies perform well but may underperform if the rally broadens beyond them.

Fidelity Nasdaq Composite Index ETF (ONEQ)

For investors preferring broader Nasdaq exposure, ONEQ offers over 1,000 holdings, including smaller-cap names and a minor allocation to financials (around 3.9%). While it is still top-heavyits largest 10 positions make up about 60%ONEQ provides more diversification than QQQ.

ONEQ and QQQ have similar expense ratios and substantial overlap in large-cap holdings. Over the past 10 years, ONEQ returned 370%, lagging QQQ's 453%. However, in the past year, both funds rose 15.6%. ONEQs broader exposure, including mid-cap and financial stocks, may offer potential advantages for capturing growth outside the largest tech companies.
