Recall of Shredded Cheese Affects Products Sold at Target, Walmart, Aldi, and Other Stores

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced a recall for multiple shredded cheese products distributed by Great Lakes Cheese Co., Inc., available at stores such as Target, Walmart, and Aldi. The recall involves numerous brands sent to more than 31 states and Puerto Rico.

Nearly 236,000 cases of shredded cheese are affected, with sell-by dates ranging from January to March 2026. Each case contains between four and 12 individual bags of cheese. The recall was initiated on October 3 due to the potential presence of metal fragments, which could cause injury if ingested. On Tuesday, the FDA updated the risk classification to Class II, indicating that while serious health issues are unlikely, temporary or reversible effects remain possible.

The affected states include Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Minnesota, Missouri, Mississippi, North Carolina, Nebraska, New Mexico, Nevada, New York, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington, and Wisconsin.
