Singapore-based Sembcorp Industries has announced plans to acquire Alinta Energy, a major Australian energy provider, aiming to expand its renewable energy capacity globally and solidify its presence in Australias energy sector.
Through a share purchase agreement with Hong Kongs Chow Tai Fook Enterprises (CTFE), Sembcorp will acquire full ownership of Alinta Energy at an enterprise value of A$6.5 billion (approximately $4.32 billion).
Alinta Energy manages a diverse generation portfolio totaling 3.4GW, including coal, gas, wind, and solar assets. The company supplies electricity and gas to close to 1.1 million customers nationwide. Since CTFE acquired it in 2017, Alinta has become one of Australias leading energy generators and retailers.
This acquisition combines Alintas deep local market knowledge with Sembcorps global expertise in renewables, providing a platform for accelerated clean energy development in Australia. Sembcorp will complete the acquisition through its Australian subsidiaries by purchasing the operational entities Pioneer Sail and Latrobe Valley Power, though the exact ownership structure remains undisclosed.
Alintas assets are highly efficient, with a dispatchable portfolio availability of 93%. The company also has a 10.4GW pipeline of renewable and firming projects, supporting Australias transition to a secure, low-carbon energy system.
Sembcorp has invested over A$5.9 billion in renewable energy projects globally and aims to reach 25GW of renewable capacity by 2028, with Australia considered a strategic market. The company confirmed it will continue supporting Alintas strategy to deliver reliable and affordable power while advancing a balanced energy transition.
Alex Tan, President and CEO of Sembcorp Renewables East, commented: Australia is a mature and forward-looking energy market. This acquisition enhances our presence in a key developed market and provides a scalable platform for accelerating renewable and low-carbon growth. By merging Sembcorps global capabilities with Alintas local workforce and project pipeline, we can meaningfully contribute to Australias decarbonisation efforts while supporting local employment.
Tan added: We are committed to responsible and sustainable operations, collaborating closely with government, communities, and Alintas management team to ensure a transition that meets national and stakeholder priorities.
CTFE has previously invested over A$1.1 billion in upgrading Alintas generation fleet, building a digital platform for customers, and developing a 10.4GW pipeline of renewables and firming projects.
Earlier in October, Sembcorp agreed to acquire ReNew Sun Bright, the solar division of ReNew Energy Global, for approximately S$246 million, further expanding its renewable energy footprint in the region.
