Sources say White House plans to suggest more lenient fuel efficiency regulations

WASHINGTON, Dec 2 (Reuters) The White House is preparing to introduce new fuel efficiency standards that are considerably less strict, reversing regulations put in place last year under former President Joe Biden, according to sources familiar with the matter.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is expected to suggest major reductions in fuel economy targets for vehicles from the 2022 through 2031 model years.

President Donald Trump is scheduled to unveil the proposal at a White House event on Wednesday, which is anticipated to include top executives from the Detroit Three automakers.

Earlier this year, Trump approved legislation eliminating fuel economy penalties for car manufacturers.
